At Ecolint, there are two types of support for students with special educational needs:
1. LEARNING SUPPORT (LS) - for children with mild to moderate learning difficulties, and
Learning Support (LS) is provided within the classroom setting as well as in small groups working with a specialist teacher. Difficulties in literacy and numeracy can be addressed through short or long-term intervention.
There is Learning Support provision in all 8 schools across our three campuses. Please see our Special Educational Needs handbooks for further information.
2. EXTENDED SUPPORT PROGRAMME (ESP) - for children with moderate to severe learning difficulties
At Campus des Nations, ESP is available for :
- Early Years students (Pregny site, ages 3-7)
- Primary School students (Saconnex site, ages 7-11)
- Secondary school students (saconnex site, ages 11-16); we have opened in September 2011 a post-16 programme (see above flyer)
Children spend varying amounts of time in an environment which is designed to facilitate learning through individual or small group work. A high staff-student ratio and a maximum number of 8 students from each school provides an optimal degree of one-to-one attention. Individual Education Plans (IEP) are written to focus efforts on helping children reach their specific goals.
Time is also spent in the mainstream classroom to develop important social skills and to provide the opportunity for children to participate in activities with classmates. Staff psychologists are available to provide counselling and support.
At La Grande Boissière, ESP is available for :
- Primary School students (ages 5-9)
- Middle School students (ages 9 to 13)
- Secondary School students (13-14 from September 2012; the programme will gradually extends until the end of schooling)
A place in the Extended Support Programme will be offered to a maximum of eight students from each school who are not able to make progress in the classroom without a significantly higher level of individual teaching and specialist support than that usually provided by our mainstream learning support staff.
Each student has a place in the regular mainstream classroom but may spend significant amounts of time in the extended support structure being taught individually or as a member of a very small group. With a high staff : student ratio the programme offers an individually tailored timetable designed specifically to meet the personal learning needs of these students who are selected taking into account their personal profile and the composition/profile of others currently enrolled in the programme.
