Ecolint Students accepted into International Honor Orchestras
International Honor Orchestras

Four of our students have had fabulous success in their auditions for the International Honor Orchestras. The fantastic four consist of two Middle School students, who have been selected for the International Junior Honor Orchestra meeting and performing in Berlin in February, and

two Secondary School students, who have been selected for the International Senior Honor Orchestra rehearsing and performing in Brussels in March.

We are very proud of our students, both for having been accepted into these high-calibre Ensembles, and for raising the profile of our school via their success.

The Association for Music in International Schools "AMIS" is dedicated to the promotion of excellence at all levels of music education. AMIS sponsors a variety of annual music festivals that are especially designed to benefit students in international schools in Europe and the Middle East.
Ecolint students' letter gets published in the New York Times

After the publication by the New York Times of an article on the American novelist Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5 or The Children’s Crusade, the Swiss maturité students at La Châtaigneraie, having studied the novel as part of the curriculum, wished to express their disagreement about one of the article’s statements.

A letter signed jointly by the students and their teacher was sent to the New York Times and was published on the 18 December.

The authors of the letter are delighted and proud to have caught the attention of the famous daily newspaper!

On Wednesday 9 November a special event for the young participants of UNOG’s “Peace Essay Contest for Schoolchildren” was held at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). This event commemorates the annual International Day of Peace and the 50th Anniversary of the Death of Dag Hammarskjöld, Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 to 1961 and Nobel Peace Prize.

We were delighted to have seen submissions from all three Ecolint campuses and winners also from all three. We are very proud indeed of all our students who participated, especially those who won in their category.

Before presenting medals to the winners of the contest, Mr. Kassym-Jomart Todayev, Director-General of the UNOG, declared: “By attending your schools, with children from all over the world, you know the importance of listening and sharing across cultures. You know the importance of accepting other people’s ideas and of learning the lessons of our past for the benefit of our future (…). Wherever you may go in life, or whatever you may do, always remember why peace is important for us all. Work hard to make your dreams become our shared reality."

Olympic Truce Campaign: Lord Bates meets LGB students!
Lord Bates with LGB students

It was with great pleasure that our school welcomed Lord Bates, member of the British Parliament, to La Grande Boissière on Wednesday 19 October.  Lord Bates gave a presentation to students about his campaign in support of the Olympic Truce. This Truce (the suspension of armed conflict world-wide for the period of the Olympic Games) is the subject of a resolution that has been adopted before each Olympic Games since 1993 by United Nations member countries, but no concrete action has ever been taken to ensure that the resolution is actually respected.

Lord Bates is therefore undertaking a 4,800 km walk, from Mount Olympus in Greece to London in order to spur the UN member countries to put concrete steps in place.  In Geneva, he met Ban Ki-Moon, as well as doing us the honour of coming to meet our students!

A great deal of fun was had by our visitors, our parents and our students as we celebrated the official opening of the new wing of the Saconnex Site of Campus des Nations. Thanks to all who came.

Some 50 guests joined over 300 parents and students to listen to Mrs Vicky Tuck, Director General and Mr Avard Bishop, President of the Governing Board speak about the wonderful new sporting facilities and additional teaching space which the new wing has given to our students. With the additional space we have also been able to find a home for our Extended Support Programme responding to the needs of students over the age of 16 with important educational needs. We also now have a permanent home for the Post Graduated Certificate in Education (PGCE International) which we offer to trainee teachers in partnership with the University of Durham.

The evening was animated by student filling the building with music and sports teams making the most of the new spaces. We are delighted that with the financial support of members of the community this wonderful wing is available to current and future students!
